91×ÔÅÄÂÛ̳Releases its Plan for Zero Waste

30th June 2020

91×ÔÅÄÂÛ̳has today shared its plan on how it expects to send zero waste to landfill by 2030, in line with the commitments it set out under its sustainability strategy, This Changes Everything.

The plan,  sees 91×ÔÅÄÂÛ̳move away from the traditional ‘take, make, use and dispose’ model to one which considers the lifecycle of the materials from the outset, and implements strategies to help avoid, reduce, reuse, recycle, and regenerate.

Mirvac’s Group General Manager, Sustainability, Sarah Clarke, commented, “Waste imposes a significant burden on the environment, and our planet can’t sustain it. It’s clear that we need to find a solution and think carefully about how we extract, use and reuse materials.

“The movement towards a circular economy makes sense. The built environment is a big contributor of global materials extraction and waste, and we see this as another opportunity to play our part and be a force for good. We can do this by using our purchasing power to buy products that are less harmful to the environment, utilising design and construction techniques that help us minimise our waste, and continuing to find ways to enhance waste outcomes at our assets.

“Removing waste is also expensive, and so by reducing the amount of waste at our sites and assets in the first place, we have the added benefit of minimising costs and delivering deeper value to our stakeholders.”

sets out seven strategies that the Group will adopt across its business to achieve its goal of sending zero waste to landfill by 2030. These strategies are leveraged by Mirvac’s integrated model, which allows it to influence the design, procurement, construction and operation of its assets.

“We also recognise that for maximum impact, we need to invest in regeneration and collaborate with our industry partners and governments to embed the circular economy more broadly,” added Ms Clarke. “It won’t happen in isolation.”

91×ÔÅÄÂÛ̳has already made great progress on reducing its waste. Since releasing This Changes Everything in 2014, the Group has diverted 69 per cent of operational waste from landfill as a result of increased resource recovery, and 96 per cent of construction waste from landfill.
